Bossa nova was first heard on record in 1958 with “Chega de Saudade,” composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Prior to releasing his own version, Gilberto had accompanied singer Elizeth Cardoso as guitarist on an earlier recording of the song. Shortly afterward, he recorded “Chega de Saudade” as his debut single, fully showcasing his new style. The success of this recording led to the release of the 1959 LP Chega de Saudade, which launched João Gilberto’s career and sparked the worldwide bossa nova movement.
